When you think of a garden in your backyard what do you see? Do you may envision a wide open space, lots of bare soil and hard packed paths between rows. Produce that is likely 4 to 6 weeks old, or even older, before it gets to your table. Even if you shop at a farmer’s market, it may be days or weeks before you use the produce. When the produce is in your garden, it is always fresh.

Think of the non-vegetables, like flowers or herbs, that you can mix in your garden for a splash of variety and color. Imagine the oohs and aahs you will get from admirers.

The great thing about urban gardens is that they don’t have to be laid out horizontally or all in one area. They can be vertical or in tiers, in pots or planters and scattered throughout the yard.

Step 1

Step 3

Research the sun/shade requirements of the plants you want to grow to determine where in the yard they should be placed.

Step 4

Depending on the room available in the right place of the yard, pick the size of the containers you need to fill that space.

Step 5

After you place the containers where you want them to be, prepare them for next spring – adding appropriate soil, perhaps winter seeding or perennials if applicable and then relax and wait for spring!
